As first generation hybrids, these dogs have the added health benefits associated to Hybrid Vigor. This is a phenomenon in animal breeding referring to the fact that the first cross between two unrelated purebred lines is healthier and grows better than either parent line.
A designer dog also known as a hybrid dog is not a BREED, it is a hybrid, which means it is a mix of more than one purebred dog who's background is known (you know what the parents of the dog were).
What's the difference between a designer dog and a mutt? Generally, a mutt is of uncertain ancestry. A designer dog has documented purebred ancestry, and one knows for sure what it is.
Why are they called designer dogs?
Two reasons. First, they are called designer dogs because many of them are bred by design for specific reasons like: minimizing allergies to shedding
and dander, having good temperaments as family pets, eliminating excessive drooling etc. Second, they are popular!
Over the years we have found the following to be true.
Designer pups are happy and outgoing dogs. They are very intelligent and easy to train but love to entertain & be part of the family.
Shih Poos:
Life Expectancy: 14 to 17 years.
Temperment: Shipoos are normally intelligent, alert, friendly, and very loyal to their owners. Like other small dogs they need to be trained and socialized. It is a good idea properly socialize them around other people and young children. They enjoy being the center of attention and because of this are not too keen to be put in a kennel. Shihpoos do well with other pets. Shih-poo's are usually very intelligent and eager to please their owners.
Pekepoos:
Life Expectancy: 12 - 15 years.
Temperment: Pekepoos are friendly, loyal and affectionate dogs. They tend to be very protective of their owners and family and should be SOCIALIZED from day one. Pekepoos can be slightly timid or uncomfortable around strangers if not socialize from a young pup, the ages of 9 weeks to 16 weeks are very important period of training. Pekepoos make a great lapdogs & family pet.
PooChons:
Life Expectancy: 15-20 Years.
Bichpoos or Poochons are generally happy, playful and energetic dogs who enjoy going on walks and trips with the family. They are also very bright and resourceful.
Because of very little if any Shedding, this makes them a good choice for people who suffer from pet dander allergies.
Teddy Bears (Bichon X Shih Tzu)
Life Expectancy: 14 to 20 years.
Temperment: This cross is normally intelligent, alert, friendly, and very loyal to their owners. They tend to be non-shedding easy to groom. It is VERY IMPORTANTto properly socialize them around other people and young children. They love, affection & being the center of attention and because of this are not too keen to be put in a kennel. They tend to love everyone & do well with other pets. Usually very intelligent and eager to please their owners.
